Welcome to the Intro to Cultural Studies/Hop on Pop Presentations Blog!

Even though you won't be reading or presenting on the Dr. Seuss classic, Hop on Pop, but a collection of cultural studies essays that bears the same name (Hop on Pop: The Politics and Pleasures of Popular Culture, edited by Henry Jenkins, Tara McPherson, and Jane Shattuc), I decided to use the Amazon.com pic of the Dr. Seuss book to start off this blog. Mostly, I like the way it asks (or requires?) that you "Search Inside" Hop on Pop. That's exactly what you are going to do over the next few weeks!!

Every week, you'll be required to post at least one question about each essay from HoP that is assigned. What essays from HoP will be assigned? YOU are going to decide that. Your HoP groups will each present on two essays, so the class will have to read the essays that you pick and post at least one question on each essay in advance of your presentation. Every HoP presentation will somehow incorporate, or hopefully even answer, the class's questions.

You will need to post your questions by 5 pm the night before a presentation. So, for Tuesday presentations, you'll need to post by 5 pm on Monday. For Thursday presentations, you'll need to post by 5 pm on Wednesday.

okay, i'm just going to post a question here anyway. On Virgins for Jesus: Do you think the developement of sexuality in teens, and adult condemnation of sexuality in teens, effects teens negatively psychologically? Forgive the wording.
Also, do you think academia, as described in the conclusion, is comparable in beliefs to christianity? Do you think the transition is similar?

Please explain how you feel Weigl uses an unconventional essay style in "Introducing Horror", and to what degree it is successful.

Weigl seems to back his arguments with a strong emotional foundation. Do you think that this weakens the essay as an academic text, or strengthens the essay by defining the horror genre as a real terror to which we can all relate?

Virgins for jesus:

Why do you think that fundamentalists christians would teach homophobic ideas in order to promote abstinence among heterosexual teens? (pg 90).

If horror must be entered to be experienced. Is it possibly to have horror in a genre that is rooted entirely away from reality? If so can you give examples.

My other question is from Adult baseball card collecting. This was a very interesting essay but it feels like this trend won't continue. Was card collecting just a phase in the 60's through 80's? I remember collecting cards in the 90's but it was only in a attempt to earn more money, i also didn't have friends that collected. Is there a different hobby taking card collecting's place, or have i just grown out of touch with this crowd?

virgins for jesus: do you think that christian leaders being part of an older generation plays a huge role in the urge for purity?
introducting horror: is it the same drive that makes us love horror movies, the one that drove romans to the arena?
stress management: Do you think women are obsessed with handling stress?
cardboard partiarchy: is it the same thing as old women collecting dolls?
